The Northeast Arkansas Chapter of MOAA was awarded a community outreach grant funded by the MOAA Foundation and the Home for Heroes Foundation. The grant funds will be used to support a program sponsored by the Beck PRIDE Center at Arkansas State University. This program is called “Paw for Vets". It is a service dog training program for veterans. The veteran & dog must pass Basic Obedience, Advanced Obedience, and Canine Good Citizen tests together. Specific tasks (2-3) for each veteran are also identified. The training cost and assistance with the adoption fee, spay/neuter costs and shots are covered in the program. The program is for Wounded Veterans and the veterans served are predominantly from Northeast Arkansas, Missouri, and Tennessee.
The Chapter met on Tuesday, June 20th, for our annual summer luncheon. In addition to the good food and good fellowship, a highlight was the presentation of a National MOAA Leadership Award to LTC Bob Schoenborn USA (Ret) to recognize his involvement with the MOAA Chapter as well as many other veteran activities in the community and the state. The photo is of LTC Schoenborn (left) receiving the award from the Chapter Vice President, Richard Hartness.
Lynda Nash, Director of the BeckPRIDE Center at ASU, spoke at the monthly MOAA Chapter meeting on October 17, 2017. Her topic was an in-depth presentation about the "Paws for Vets" program which she supervises at the Center. In this program, veterans who desire a trained dog to help them cope with a personal problem related to their prior service, are assisted in obtaining an appropriate dog and provided with an eighteen week training course for the veteran and his or her dog. Specific problems which the dogs may be trained to deal with can vary from simple companionship to awaking the individual from nightmares or preventing an individual from being surprised by unexpected approaches. Ms. Nash shared stories of the veterans being helped by their service dogs as well as her own learning process in establishing the program at the Center.
